Business backups that do not leave in someone's bag
AristaTech replaces take-home backup drives with a managed backup of all your infrastructure, including computers and servers, your cloud email accounts, such as Microsoft 365, and your OneDrive and SharePoint files. We run scheduled restore tests, and backup checks are part of our managed IT service.
What is wrong with the drive in the bag
Taking a copy offsite makes sense, but a take-home drive has weak points:
- it depends on one person remembering every week
- between Fridays, the only copy is in the office
- a drive left plugged in can be hit by ransomware too. The ASD's ACSC warns that backups may be affected if they were stored on the infected device or connected to the same network
- a drive in a bag can be lost or stolen
- nobody knows whether it would restore until the day it is needed
What a safer setup looks like
The Australian Signals Directorate's Essential Eight treats regular backups as one of eight core strategies. In plain terms, a safer setup is:
- backups run on a schedule, without anyone having to remember
- a copy is kept off the device and network it protects
- ordinary accounts cannot change or delete the backups
- data, applications and settings are covered, not only the shared drive
- restores are tested, so you know the backup works
Microsoft 365 needs backing up too
Email, OneDrive and SharePoint live in Microsoft's cloud, but deleted data is only recoverable for a limited time. Microsoft keeps deleted SharePoint items for 93 days, and deleted Exchange Online email for 14 days by default, up to 30. Microsoft offers Microsoft 365 Backup as a separate product. We back up your cloud email, including Microsoft 365 mail, and your OneDrive and SharePoint files.
Testing a restore
Until you have restored from a backup, you cannot be sure it works. We run restore tests on a schedule, and backup checks are part of our managed IT service. Whoever looks after your backups, ask how and when restores are tested.
Moving off the drive without a gap
Keep the old routine going until the new backup has run and a test restore works. Then retire the drive, wipe it and store or destroy it securely.
